When it comes to creating a circular economy and recycling – glass is a fantastic material. All of your glass bottles and jars can be used to make new glass bottles or jars. Recycling glass packaging reduces CO2 emissions as well as the amount of energy and raw materials used to make new containers. And it\u2019s really easy to do: in just about every part of the UK there are kerbside collections or glass banks for household glass waste. It can take just a few weeks for your waste glass to reappear on shop shelves as shiny, new bottles and jars.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although glass recycling is nothing new, sadly around half of the glass packaging that goes into UK households doesn\u2019t currently get remelted into new glass products. That\u2019s why this Recycle Week we want your help to get everyone to recycle more of their glass bottles and jars.<\/span><\/p>\n

What glass items can I recycle?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Local authorities use slightly different systems for collecting and sorting the materials for recycling – and these will affect what you can recycle and how. So look on your council website or at Recycle Now\u2019s recycling locator<\/a> to check for your area. <\/span><\/p>\n

All glass bottles and jars can be remelted to make new containers. Don\u2019t forget…<\/span><\/p>\n

Perfume\/aftershave bottles and cosmetic jars?<\/b><\/h3>\n

These are often made from clear glass, which is particularly useful to glass manufacturers. So recycle them with your other glass bottles and jars and feel good that your action is saving resources and energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/h3>\n

Medicine bottles?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Yes, they can be recycled too. Cough syrup, pills, kids medicines, indigestion relief – if it comes in glass you can recycle the container. Just rinse and recycle with your other glass. Don\u2019t waste this great resource by throwing it away in general waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

What can\u2019t I recycle?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Household glass recycling can\u2019t accept: <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0– light bulbs and glass cookware eg PYREX – these are chemically different and can\u2019t be used to make new bottles and jars.
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0– crockery and ceramics – this won\u2019t melt in a glass furnace so keep it out of your glass recycling.
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0– window panes or broken glass – this is usually to do with the way that the glass is collected and sorted.<\/p>\n

Some recycling centres have different facilities, so it is always worth checking whether there are options to recycle these locally. Again – the Recycle Now locator<\/a> can help you.\"Recycle<\/a><\/p>\n
