{"id":293,"date":"2019-08-14T08:55:24","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T08:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/gb\/health-gb\/jos-162-mile-trek-beats-the-weather\/1"},"modified":"2024-08-28T04:59:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T04:59:22","slug":"jos-162-mile-trek-beats-the-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendsofglass.com\/uk\/stories\/jos-162-mile-trek-beats-the-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"Jo\u2019s 162-mile trek beats the weather"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div  class=\"custom-rich-text-block transparent\">\r\n    <div class=\"custom-rich-text spacing-top-2 spacing-bottom-2 global-container\">\r\n        <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/162-mile-trek-friends-glass-min-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28282 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/162-mile-trek-friends-glass-min-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fighting her way through thunder, lightning, rainstorms, and massive strings of pondweed, Jo completed the 162-mile Desmond Family Canal Trail from Liverpool to Goole in just 11 days.<\/p>\n<p>The Trail is the longest of its kind in the UK and is privately funded to provide exciting activities for 16 \u2013 25-year-olds on their local waterways.<\/p>\n<p>Jo was supported by the \u2018Friends of Glass\u2019 project part funded in the UK by Sheffield-based British Glass and the UK\u2019s glass manufacturers, and FEVE, the European container glass federation.<\/p>\n<p>A highlight of the trip was paddling through Knottingley, near Leeds, late one evening: the town is well known for glass manufacturing as three different glass companies are based there, and as Jo paddled along she could hear the chinking of glass from one of the factories on the canal.<\/p>\n<p>Jo, of Embsay, near Skipton, has become well known for her surfing and paddle boarding activities, which she combines with a daily two-minute litter pick.<\/p>\n<p>She recently featured in the award-winning \u2018Welcome to Yorkshire\u2019 canal garden scene at the Chelsea Flower Show, and was chosen to take part in an international surfing video shot in fashionable Biarritz, a mecca for surfers.<\/p>\n<p>The international video, produced by Friends of Glass, aims to increase awareness of the importance of the ocean and has become a popular view on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The 54-year-old has been collecting rubbish from the beautiful Runswick Bay beach on the Yorkshire Coast she\u2019s been visiting for over 40 years and regularly plogs &#8211; runs and picks up litter &#8211; around her home.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI trained for months for the canal trek and was extremely excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s taken me through a mix of countryside and built-up areas and from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jo undertook the canal trek to raise funds for The Wave Project, which uses surfing to help young people grow in confidence, and the not-for-profit #2-minute Beach Clean movement.<\/p>\n<p>The canal journey saw her beat her own target of raising \u00a31,000 for The Wave Project with further donations still to be added.\u00a0She added: \u201cI\u2019m passionate about our waterways and oceans, and our young people.\u201d<\/p>\n\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yorkshire woman Jo Moseley has paddleboarded the width of the UK \u2013 on canals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":549,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-293","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
