{"id":299,"date":"2019-09-27T08:25:22","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T08:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/gb\/ecology-gb\/recycle-week-case-study-trerobart-primary-school-pontypridd\/1"},"modified":"2024-08-28T00:42:46","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T00:42:46","slug":"recycle-week-trerobart-primary-school-pontypridd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendsofglass.com\/uk\/stories\/recycle-week-trerobart-primary-school-pontypridd\/","title":{"rendered":"Recycle Week Case Study: Trerobart Primary School, Pontypridd"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<div  class=\"custom-rich-text-block transparent\">\r\n    <div class=\"custom-rich-text spacing-top-2 spacing-bottom-2 global-container\">\r\n        <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trerobart-primary-glass-competition-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-28207 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofglass.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trerobart-primary-glass-competition-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The children in Year 5 at Trerobart Primary School in Pontypridd love to do research.\u00a0 Fortunately they recently got to do lots of it thanks to their school\u2019s involvement with Glass Guardians, an initiative from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britglass.co.uk\">British Glass<\/a> and the National Schools Partnership created to educate children about the 100% recyclability and sustainability benefits of glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was so much to learn and find out about glass \u2013 how it is recycled, what types of glass can and can\u2019t be recycled, how recycling glass saves C02 and energy, the importance of separating the different colours in the reprocessing, the children really enjoyed finding out about it all\u201d explains Year 5\u2019s teacher Alyson Parry. \u201cI personally didn\u2019t realise for example that you can\u2019t recycle mirror glass, so there was lots of really useful information for us all to learn about\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The class also got a lot of enjoyment and learning from the wide variety of materials supplied, such as the PowerPoint, video and workbooks that came as part of the Glass Guardians pack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PowerPoint and video were really engaging and informative and the children particularly liked having their own individual booklets\u201d says Alyson. \u201cIt meant each child had their own personal record of all the activities we were doing and had a place to keep safe their work, such as creating a storyboard about the glass recycling process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another element that captured the children\u2019s imagination was being able to apply what they were learning about glass in other lessons. \u201cWe\u2019ve been studying persuasive writing techniques in English and the children were able to write about glass recycling using alliteration, rhetorical questions, the power of 3 and emotive language\u201d explains Alyson \u201cit was a perfect combination. The Glass Guardians gave them the facts and the children used these when practicing their writing techniques. They really enjoyed this; it made a perfect combination\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most useful things Alyson believes was the level and range of information and activities provided. \u201cIt was just right for the children. There was a good mix between printed materials and video. The mini projects meant the children got to work with a partner and of course there was the opportunity to do lots of lovely researching too!\u201d.<\/p>\n\r\n            <\/div>\r\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Recycle Week, change is in your hands and our Glass Guardians programme has sparked a number of little acts of activism.
