With recent news on children missing school to protest about climate change, plastic pollution reaching even remote environments and the UK currently experiencing a warmer than average February, the general public is becoming more aware of their impact on the planet.

More and more people are looking to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, and glass can help you do just that.

Glass is one of the most environmentally friendly packaging materials as it is made from natural ingredients and can be recycled an infinite amount of times without ever losing its quality.

So in light of this, we’ve listed four ways that glass can help you be more sustainable on a day to day basis.

Use a glass coffee cup for your morning drink

Most of us need a warm drink (or three) to get ourselves going in the morning but whether you drink coffee or tea, there’s a way you can be more sustainable with your morning brew.

In the UK alone, we use 7 million disposable coffee cups every day but only 1% of those are recycled.

However, there’s a simple way you can help – invest in a reusable glass coffee cup.

Not only will the inert quality of glass keep your drink tasting perfect and piping hot throughout the morning, but it could also get you a nice little discount from most high street coffee shops in the UK.

There are plenty of options to choose from, including Keepcup or the Sol Cup, to make your morning drink more sustainable.

Take glass jars to zero waste shops

Zero waste shops have been on the rise over the last couple of years as people look for a more eco-friendly way to shop and cut down on packaging and food waste.

The shops, which are dotted around the UK, offer a wide range of goods to buy including organic food, household goods and kitchenware, and all you have to do is take your own container along to fill up.

Glass is non-porous meaning that your food will stay fresh for longer, so why not find your local zero waste shop and take along a glass mason jar to fill up with all your shopping.

Buy your beauty and toiletry products in glass

A recent survey conducted by FEVE found that 86% of consumers see glass as the most premium packaging for beauty products.

On top of this, the survey also found that 9 in 10 people have become more environmentally conscious about how their consumer choices impact the environment.

So, why not combine the two and make a sustainable choice by buying your beauty products in glass.

Not only will it give a quality feel to your products but it’ll also preserve its scent for longer.

While we’re on the topic, why not go one step further and get some of your toiletry products in glass.

You can get your toothpaste and your deodorant in a recyclable glass jar, which can be remade into other glass packaging and be back in use in as little as 30 days.

Ditch the plastic straws for a glass alternative

Following the government’s proposal to ban plastic straws before October 2020 now is the ideal time to ditch them for good in favour of a sustainable alternative.

In that case, look no further than glass.

Both reusable and recyclable, glass straws can be used as many times as you like and they won’t leach any chemicals or toxins into your drinks – making it the perfect replacement.
