Our approach was simple – make glass recycling easier and more fun. That’s why we created the Recycling Hero competition, asking the community to take a selfie or photo whilst recycling bottles or jars at specially decorated glass banks at M&S Moortown store or any other glass bank in Leeds.
The glass banks at M&S Moortown were recently emptied for the second time, since being installed during April. We are very excited to announce that this collection weighed 295.2 tonnes. This is the largest weight recorded within the area for the month of May in the last four years.
This represents a 100 tonne increase from May 2016, when the total weight for the month was 194.4 tonnes, and is 56 tonnes up on the previous highest record for May, which was 239.1 tonnes in 2015.
May 2017 is also the second highest tonnage in this area for 2017 so far, only behind the usual Christmas/New Year peak in January of 320.5 tonnes.
We would like to say big thank you to M&S, Leeds City Council and everyone who participated in the campaign. We hope that glass-recycling rates in Leeds will continue to increase.
